The objective
To explore typographic form and function through designing an editorial spread for Psychology Today. Through this process, I refined my concept developmental skills, research, process and organization; used visual variables to achieve aesthetic and communicative impact; and used grids and typographic variables that revealed hierarchy inherent in a message.
GOALS
- Instill a deeper sensitivity to typographic form and function
- Gain a more critical eye for affecting the transmission of a message
- Develop a more informed basis for making typographic decisions with large amounts of text
MOODBOARD & INSPIRATION
Type Study
When thinking about the article's title "Why Visibility Matters" the first image that came to mind was the eye test chart that you have to do when you go the the optometrist for an exam. I thought this would be a clever idea to present LGBTQ+ community representation in the form of a literal chart that measures visual acuity.
My second idea fosters the idea of LGBTQ+ representation in television with the imagery of an old school tv. I wanted to create one version that spans across the magazine spread but thought about how my artwork might be affected by the gutter of the page.
Sketches
Iterations
After much deliberation, I decided to go with the eye chart concept. This idea felt more original and creative than using a cliché television to represent LGBTQ+ representation in the media.
